WOMEN RISING: CHOREOGRAPHY FROM THE FEMALE PERSPECTIVE
August 16, 2019 - 8:30pm

In celebration of the 99th anniversary of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote, Brockus Project will present Women Rising: Choreography from the Female Perspective. The evening will pay tribute to women pioneers of modern dance as well as celebrating women choreographers working in Los Angeles today who continue to innovate. Ten groups will perform, including LA Contemporary Dance Company, Blue13 Dance, BrockusRED, JazzAntiqua, Kitty McNamee, Kybele Dance Theatre, Luminario Ballet, MashUP Contemporary Dance Company, Rosanna Gamson/World Wide, and Sarah Elgart/Arrogant Elbow.

It is one of LACDC's most celebrated pieces of repertoire, has toured internationally and domestically and been performed in a multitude of presenting houses around the world.

Additionally, the program features original music by LA composers Louis Lopez and Robert Amjarv, as well as San Francisco’s NewVillager. The Only Constant

World Premiere

Choreography: Genevieve Carson

Developed in various iterations since 2016, choreographer Genevieve Carson presents a new evening length project, The Only Constant, a work that skates the line between composure and chaos. Featuring the classic compositions of Bach, Mozart, and Chopin, the score is enhanced and distorted by Los Angeles composer Robert Amjarv. The result is a wild, graceful, heartbreaking, and ironic work. Through her direction, Carson aims to capture the profundity of human existence—the solitude of individuality and how our paths are knocked off course and altered by the happenstance of meeting others. Embodying the feeling of juxtaposition that makes up the human existence, The Only Constant sheds light on the small fleeting moments of beauty that make the perpetual struggle of life all worth it. The dancers are challenged to grapple with feelings of frustration and exhaustion, and ultimately required to question their own motivation to engage.
